NOW Magazine reviews X-Amounts

Posted Oct 11, 13:01 by Kevin Finlayson

NOW Magazine has reviewed X-Amounts and given the record a very respectable 4 ‘stars’ out of five. We’ll probably post a scan of the review soon, but for now, here’s the text:

CONTROLLER.CONTROLLER X-Amounts (Paper Bag) Rating: NNNN

At some point in the near future, controller.controller will probably regret ever describing their sound as death disco. Though some may accuse them of jumping on the Rapture bandwagon, it’s worked well for them so far. This is their first full-length album (last year’s History was technically an EP), and while it sounds more developed and professional than their earlier work, it still has an unmistakable controller.controller sound that won’t surprise anyone who’s seen them play. This is good contemporary rock music – the production sounds lifelike and visceral, the songs are catchy and the beats make me want to get a bad haircut and jump around awkwardly.

-Benjamin Boles

Just bought the record. Listened to it once and its already blowing me away like History has for the past year. Now if only I could get tickets for their show in Victoria! It seems our local radio station thought it smart to buy every single ticket and give them away to idiots who just like anything that’s free. Whatever happened to good clean capitalism?

WOW. amazing cd. good review.
i wrote a comment before but it didn’t post..so i wrote another one, and it didn’t post again because i didn’t enter my e mail, so for the third time, SUCH a good cd.
the first track, it’s quiet, so i put it really loud in the car. “ooh its not workin—-AH!” BLAST.
great songs. its full of bopping head tracks. i cant imagine how it is live:)

Thanks for the comments, folks. Controller are busy playing their CD release party tonight, and I’m sure they’ll have replies for you soon. We’re still fine-tuning the commenting, so we’ll make sure to indicate that email addresses are required (it discourages spam).

Pray for Mojo, that exact thing happened to me for the first track. Great cover art for this album too. I saw Controller live at the UofT frosh week concert and they had amazing energy, great show. I would die to see them again live. Toronto…Toronto….!!!

You guys are great! I’m glad you like the new record. As for the ten seconds of guitar amp feedback/transmission at the very beginning of the record, we’re sorry if turning up the volume has caused any damage to any eardrums, particularly to Pray For Mojo or Steph. It just sounded so good leading into “Tigers not Daughters”!

*Mark: sorry about the ticket situation. Can you make it to Nanaimo the next day?

**Willem: I LOVE “Poison/Safe”. It is dedicated, unofficially, to our webmaster Kevin (but only the nice parts).

I’m in the same boat as Mark (and I suspect all the others in Victoria) wanting to go to the show but being held hostage by a radio station—- yet another example of why radio sucks?!

and no I can’t make it to the Vancouver or Nanaimo show.

bah!

“they’re live shows are fantastic”
pfft, thats an understatement
they’re live shows are fantasamo! the only bad thing about they’re live shows are the hacks who bob their heads and don’t dance.
I’ve been a fan since History, and i scored an early copy of x-amounts a few days before it came out
..and it blew me awwaaaaay!

You guys are amazing!

MP, I’m sorry you can’t make it to Vancouver or Nanaimo and I hope we’ll be back in Victoria sometime soon, when tickets are not contest-only. Mark, maybe we’ll see you in Nanaimo? (And thanks for the kind words about the vocals in “Rooms”.) Stephanie, hopefully we’ll see you in Halifax! We’ve got two shows to play, so you have two chances to catch us.

Raychel, thanks for sticking with us!
